The Seventh Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) Scientific Symposium will be held in the second half of 2011. The WIOMSA Board of Trustees will be meeting early March 2010 to decide on the dates and the venue of the Symposium.
WIOMSA traditionally organizes the Symposiums in close collaboration with national institutions of Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. In the First Symposium held in 1997 in Mombasa, Kenya, WIOMSA collaborated with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute. The Second Symposium, which took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2001, was hosted in collaboration with the National Environment Management Council and the Department of Zoology and Marine Biology of the University of Dar es Salaam. The Third Symposium was held in Maputo, Mozambique in 2003 and was hosted by the University of Eduardo Mondlane, while the Fourth one took place in Mauritius in 2005 with the Mauritius Oceanographic Institute hosting it. The Oceanographic Research Institute hosted the Fifth Symposium which was held in Durban, South Africa in 2007, while a consortium of three institutions, l’Université de La Réunion, l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) and l’Institut Français pour la Recherche et l’Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) hosted the Sixth Symposium in Reunion in August 2009.
In all the six Symposiums, the collaborating institutions as the host of the Symposium played a key role in the organization of these events ranging from coordinating all local arrangements related to the Symposium, providing secretariat staff, to fund raising to cover some of the costs of the event.
In this regard, WIOMSA is inviting expressions of interest to host the upcoming Symposium from all the countries including those that have hosted the Symposiums before. Countries that have never hosted it before, namely Comoros, Madagascar, and the Seychelles are encouraged to submit their expression of interest. The host could be a single institution or a consortium of institutions.
When submitting your brief expression of interest, please indicate why your institution would like to host the Symposium; highlight the experience of your institution in hosting such events; list some venue options and their general description in terms of availability of essential infrastructure and support facilities and what would be the contribution of your institution to the organization and the hosting of the Symposium.
The expressions of interest should be submitted to the Executive Secretary (secretary@wiomsa.org) by 19 February 2010.

Every year UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP offer PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships to provide young scholars and policy-makers, especially from the developing world, with a multidisciplinarily context within which to pursue advanced research and training that is of professional interest to the successful applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of their selected UNU-IAS or UNU-ISP programme.
The fellowship programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:
- develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS or UNU-ISP faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute,
- widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of the UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators,
- become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system, and
- link with other UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The Fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama, UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa, or UNU-ISP in Tokyo, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives the PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP.
UNU’s close institutional links with Japanese affiliated professors and researchers from key universities and think tanks in Japan and around the world also allows Fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community. Since the start of the fellowship programme at UNU-IAS in 1996, more than 180 young scholars, 70% of which from the developing world, have benefited from collaboration with UNUIAS/UNU-ISP and Japanese scholars in this way. Applications will be invited for the following three fellowship types:
i) UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship
ii) UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship
iii) JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral
DEADLINE FOR SENDING APPLICATIONS: 28 February 2010
